Hi. These are the essays I want to write that no one will hire me for
I have been writing and editing full-time for more than 10 years, with bylines in the New York Times, Longreads, Outside, Huffington Post, Lonely Planet, and more. One of the side effects of writing for other people is that it can be hard to maintain my own voice, plus the never-ending misery of trying to sell a story that doesn’t include a lot of gear links or service lists.
These pieces cover the most personal topics I feel like writing about. Anywhere from once a year to every month, I will send out an inane, rambling essay on a subject I want to write about with no one giving me parameters. This can be anything from behind the scenes of a full-time writing career to thoughts on losing my best friend in a freak work accident. The only thing they have in common is that they don’t fit into a nice category, no one wanted to hire me to write them, or I didn’t want to risk losing my voice in the process.
This is kind of a word playground for me and I’m really happy you’re here.
If you subscribe in any capacity, it would make me happy.
You’ll get these posts in your inbox with no other spam, just my real writing voice. I won’t try to sell you any products, there are no affiliate links, and no perky final paragraphs where I tie things up with a neat bow to keep advertisers happy.
The stories are yours to read for free. If you want to throw me a few bucks, please do! But in the words of an anxious millennial, no worries if not.
Follow along.
My Instagram is here, and my website is here with the stuff I’m paid to write. The rest of my archived essays are here.
